Don Carter, a newsman for 5 decades, dies in Georgia at 99

Don E. Carter, a newspaper reporter, editor and executive whose career spanned nearly five decades, has died at age 99.

Richard Best, a funeral director for Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, confirmed Carter died Wednesday at his coastal Georgia home on Sea Island.

Carter became a reporter for The Atlanta Journal after graduating from the University of Georgia in 1938. He was the newspaper's city editor after serving in the Army during World War II. Carter later served as a top editor at The National Observer, the Bergen Evening Record in New Jersey, the Macon Telegraph and as publisher of the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky. He retired in 1982 after six years as a vice president for Knight-Ridder.

Carter's surviving relatives include his cousin, former President Jimmy Carter.
