Crematory suspended after worker took home 93 sets of ashes

Published April 13, 2017

Associated Press

The license of a crematory has been suspended after the ashes of 93 unclaimed bodies were found at the home of an employee in North Carolina.

Local media report the North Carolina Board of Funeral Services suspended Cremation Services Inc. of Winston-Salem. The remains were discovered in February when the employee's neighbor noticed a bone fragment and ashes near a trash can.

Susanne Blair of Cremation Services says the employee had permission to take the remains of the unclaimed bodies, since his home in the town of King was on the way to the Blue Ridge Mountains, where he planned to spread the ashes.

Stokes County prosecutors say no law was broken. Regulators scheduled a hearing for May 10.
