Correction: For-Profit Colleges-Military story

In a Sept. 22 story about federal spending on veterans' education, The Associated Press, relying on figures provided by a U.S. Senate committee, incorrectly reported that $1 billion out of a total of $4.4 billion disbursed under the new Post 9/11 G.I. Bill during the 2010-2011 academic year was awarded to for-profit colleges.

On Thursday, the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions said it had miscalculated and that those figures in fact covered the last two academic years. The committee said the correct one-year figures are that $2.5 billion was distributed, and $626 million went to eight for-profit schools. The University of Phoenix received $133 million, not $210 million.

The story also reported that for-profits enroll roughly 25 percent of veterans using the program but receive 37 percent of GI Bill funds. Those numbers also cover two years, not one.
