A Connecticut man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly killing a black bear that wandered on to his property.

Cory J. Maitz, 42, faces charges of illegally killing the animal -- a misdemeanor -- and felony criminal possession of a pistol, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announced.

DEEP officers arrived at Maitz's home in Burlington, west of Hartford, at around 7:30am local time after his neighbor reported a black bear had been shot and killed.

The officers investigated and determined that Maitz shot the 460-pound animal after it wandered into his garage and backyard, according to a press release from DEEP.

He was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court June 4. The bear's carcass and the gun were seized as evidence.

Guidelines from DEEP recommend that anyone who spots a bear should "enjoy it from a distance."
