Hundreds of Confederate battle flags were waving in a Stone Mountain, Ga., parking lot on Saturday, at a rally in support of the controversial symbol.

Some supporters danced to the tune of “Dixie” and others cheered as they stood atop pickup trucks. Some openly held guns. The rally attracted several hundred people to Stone Mountain Park, which commemorates Confederate leaders in a giant carving on the side of the mountain.

The event was the latest moment of unity for battle-flag supporters during a summer when elected officials, companies and university leaders have denounced the red, white and blue symbol of the Confederacy.

After nine African-Americans were killed in a Charleston, S.C., church in June, allegedly by a white gunman, there have been growing calls to strip buildings and public areas of memorials to and commemorations of symbols of the Confederacy.

The alleged Charleston shooter, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, was photographed with Confederate battle flags before the attack.
