Clemson students say they'll continue sit-in through weekend

Published April 18, 2016

One of the organizers of a sit-in at Clemson University says protesters will stay inside the building through the weekend if school leaders don't answer their call to improve the racial climate on campus.

The Independent Mail of Anderson reports (http://bit.ly/1qMKDge) the sit-in was in its third day Friday despite five students being issued citations Thursday for trespassing.

Organizer Sherman Jones said the roughly 40 protesters will remain in the lobby of Sikes Hall if the school takes no action.

Jones said protesters want direct talks with President Jim Clements to end the sit-in, which began Wednesday after a campus march to demand more diversity and improved race relations. However, Chief of Staff Max Allen said Clements was not on campus Friday and wouldn't be available.
