Church mirror replaces caged Holy Family immigration protest

Published July 26, 2018

Associated Press

An Indianapolis church that displayed statues of Mary, Joseph and Jesus in a cage to protest the Trump administration's zero tolerance immigration policy has a new display — a mirror.

The mirror is encased behind fencing and barbed wire outside the Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Indianapolis.

Rev. Stephen Carlsen tells The Indianapolis Star he changed the display so visitors could envision themselves in a cage, enduring the pain felt by detained and separated families.

Written above the mirror is the hashtag, #EveryFamilyIsHoly. The Episcopalian church is encouraging people to take photographs and share them online.

The original display of a caged Holy Family appeared in early July.

The Trump administration has since changed its policy and is working to meet a court-imposed deadline to reunite thousands of children and parents forcibly separated at the U.S.-Mexico border.
