China: New UN resolution will affect China-NKorea exchanges

Published February 25, 2016

Associated Press

China's top diplomat says that the U.N. resolution proposed against North Korea after its recent nuclear test will affect exchanges between the two countries.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a Washington think tank Thursday that council members understand that the livelihood of the North Korean people should not be adversely affected.

But he added that "in order to uphold the international nuclear nonproliferation regime, for the sake of denuclearization, our exchanges will be affected to some extent."

The U.S. says a draft resolution is due to be submitted to the council Thursday. Wang didn't provide details on what's in it.

China is North Korea's main trading partner and has been reluctant to impose measures that could threaten the stability of its traditional ally and cause the country's economy to collapse.
