Chicago-area sheriff resumes foreclosure evictions

A Chicago-area sheriff who halted foreclosure evictions last month because some bank employees weren't following the proper procedures says he's ordering his deputies to start carrying them out again even though banks have not taken the steps he said they must if they want the evictions to resume.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says in a statement that county prosecutors have told him he must carry out the evictions if they are signed by a judge — even if his office has uncovered irregularities in the paperwork.

But Dart says that while he's lifting the moratorium, his investigation will continue and banks and their workers could be charged with crimes. Dart says investigators have found plenty of evidence of bank workers signing foreclosure documents they couldn't have read.
