Charges dropped in Houston murder-for-hire plot case

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A Houston-area attorney accused of orchestrating at least three unsuccessful attempts to kill his wife is avoiding trial after prosecutors decided they don't have sufficient evidence against him.

Jeffrey Stern had been set for final pretrial hearing later this week. His lawyer, Paul Nugent, said Tuesday that the Harris County district attorney's office was dropping all charges against Stern.

Stern had been charged with two counts of soliciting capital murder in a 2010 plot that involved his mistress. Stern's wife, Yvonne, was shot but survived.

Stern proclaimed he had no involvement in the murder attempts. His wife has been supporting him throughout the case.
