Campus critters are nuts for Penn State's 'Squirrel Girl'

Published November 30, 2016

Associated Press

Penn State students know her as the Squirrel Whisperer, or even Squirrel Girl.

Four years after she became an internet sensation, senior Mary Krupa (KROO'-pah) is still placing tiny hats on the ubiquitous rodents that live on campus, and coaxing them to hold miniature props. Her photos of "Sneezy the Penn State Squirrel" continue to garner thousands of likes on Facebook and have been featured in magazines and calendars.

Krupa began interacting with Penn State's wild gray squirrels her first week on campus. With Penn State reeling from the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal, she decided her fellow students could use a laugh.

Sneezy became an unofficial mascot. Over the years, Krupa has dreamed up many amusing scenes for the squirrel.

Krupa graduates next month.
