Callers saw naked man before face-chewing attack

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Callers to 911 reported seeing a naked man swinging from a light pole along a Miami causeway minutes before a face-eating attack on a homeless man.

According to recordings made public Tuesday, the first 911 call came at 1:53 p.m. on May 26 from a motorist who said a "completely naked man" was "acting like Tarzan" on the causeway. A second motorist called a minute later, saying there was a naked man along the road.

Police say 31-year-old Rudy Eugene attacked 65-year-old Ronald Poppo minutes later. During the attack Eugene stripped off Poppo's clothes and chewed off most of his face before he was shot and killed by a police officer. Police have not released a motive for the attack.

Poppo remains hospitalized in Miami.
