California high school girl fatally stabbed on campus by attacker

A 15-year-old Northern California high school student died Monday after a "trespasser" stabbed her "multiple" times on campus, officials said.
The assailant approached the grounds of Stagg High School in Stockton and began stabbing the teenager, who has not been identified, John Ramirez, superintendent for the Stockton Unified School District, said during a news conference.
The suspect, who was described as a man and is not a student, was taken into custody and a motive for the attack has not been determined, he said. A district police officer was nearby and was able to "do his job and help prevent that from continuing," Ramirez said.

The victim was taken to a hospital and later died. The school was placed on lockdown following the incident.
"It's a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," Ramirez said.
Any relationship between the attacker and student has not been disclosed.
