Bridge case defendants ask judge to throw out case

The two defendants in the George Washington Bridge lane-closing case are asking a judge to toss out the charges.

In court papers filed late Monday, attorneys for Bill Baroni and Bridget Kelly argued impeding the flow of traffic is not a civil rights violation. They also claim the prosecution is hampering their defense by not sharing evidence.

An indictment unsealed last year charges them with wire fraud and civil rights violations for allegedly orchestrating the 2013 bridge lane closures to create traffic jams to punish a mayor for not endorsing Gov. Chris Christie's re-election.

Christie hasn't been charged.

Baroni was a top Christie appointee to the bistate authority that runs the bridge. Kelly was Christie's deputy chief of staff at the time.

Prosecutors have until Feb. 24 to respond.
