Border patrol agents accused of racial profiling Hispanics in Ohio; trial to begin Tuesday

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

Two groups that work with Hispanics in Ohio are taking a racial profiling lawsuit against the U.S. Border Patrol to trial.

The federal trial is scheduled to get underway Tuesday in Toledo.

The lawsuit accuses border patrol agents along Lake Erie of targeting and detaining Hispanics based on their ethnicity. The two groups bringing the lawsuit say border patrol logs show a disproportionate number of stops involving Hispanics.

U.S. Justice Department lawyers have denied those claims of discrimination and say in court documents that all of the stops were legal.

The lawsuit is focused on border agents along Lake Erie who patrol the northern Ohio area near Canada.

Attorneys say the incidents began in 2009 and have continued in recent years.
