Police motorcycles and firetrucks with flashing lights headed a procession for a federal firefighter whose body is headed home to Vermont after he was killed battling a wildfire in Nevada.

Justin Beebe's casket was flown Wednesday from North Las Vegas Airport aboard a twin-engine U.S. Forest Service "smokejumper" aircraft.

The 26-year-old died Saturday fighting a blaze near Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park, about 200 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

He was a member of the Lolo Hotshots based in Missoula, Montana — one of the elite Forest Service crews called for the most dangerous wildfires in the West.

Beebe's parents in Bellows Falls, Vermont, say he loved the outdoors as a New England logger and worked the family maple syrup farm.

He wanted to become a paramedic.
