Body of missing skier found buried in avalanche

Published February 02, 2016

Authorities say they have found the body of a missing Utah skier buried under three feet of snow from an avalanche in the backcountry outside Park City.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office says 50-year-old Stephen Jones of Wanship, Utah, was found Tuesday afternoon after crews followed the signal from his avalanche beacon. He was reported missing Sunday night when he didn't come back from a ski trip.

Police say Jones was an experienced skier in good physical condition. But he was apparently caught in a slide about 60 feet wide and 500 feet long in the Shale Shot area of the Wasatch Back near the Park City ski area.

Deputies and ski patrollers searched the resort and the backcountry after finding his car in the Canyon Village parking lot.
