Black voters helped defeat prosecutor in Tamir Rice case

An analysis has found black voters played a large role in defeating an Ohio prosecutor criticized by members of the black community for his handling of an investigation into the death of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old black boy shot by a white officer.

Cleveland.com (http://bit.ly/1R8HE7Y) reports its analysis examined voting trends and found Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh) County Prosecutor Tim McGinty's opponent, Michael O'Malley, received about 70 percent of the votes in precincts identified as having a majority black voting population.

O'Malley will take office in January.

McGinty has been criticized for his handling of the investigation into Tamir's death. The boy was fatally shot by a police officer while playing with pellet gun outside a recreation center in November 2014. A grand jury declined to indict police in the shooting.
