Bear running wild in Phoenix suburb eludes capture; authorities say animal isn't aggressive

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

Authorities have given up trying to capture a bear that was running through a Phoenix suburb much of Monday morning.

Mesa Police Department spokesman Steve Flores said a driver called authorities to report the bear running wild around 7 a.m. Officers from three agencies then tried to capture the animal, but it was too elusive and ran into a former General Motors test site. The area contains fields, shrubbery and trees, and Flores says it is too big of an area to track the bear.

He said it's not an aggressive bear and seems intent on avoiding people. It's not known where the bear came from or how long it has been in the area.
