A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that may lead to an arrest in the murder of a 19-year-old college student who prosecutors say was targeted.
Brendan Tevlin was found dead after being shot several times inside his Jeep Liberty in a New Jersey apartment parking lot about a mile from where witnesses reported hearing gunshots.
"Our preliminary investigation indicates that it was not random. It was targeted," Kath Carter, an Essex County prosecutor's spokeswoman told The New York Post.
Tevlin reportedly was playing video games with friends at a house in West Orange and texted his mother near midnight to say he was returning to the family’s home in Livingston.
Authorities found his car about a mile from the house where he had spent the evening.
"He was either hijacked and dumped there or he was on his last breath and just pulled over," an unidentified resident who lives in the area told the Post.
Another resident who lives near where authorities believe the shots were fired told The Star-Ledger he thought the shots were part of a storm.
“We think six (shots),” Ed Larsen told The Star-Ledger. “We thought it was the transformer blow,” he said.
“The investigation is very active,” Anthony Ambrose, the chief of detectives for the prosecutor's office told The Star-Ledger.
Tevlin was a 2013 graduate of Seton Hall Preparatory School where he was a popular lacrosse player, and had recently returned home after completing his freshman year at The University of Richmond.
Hundreds attended a mass held Thursday for Tevlin where he was remembered as a “model citizen.”
