Authorities: Large stick found in DC subway where man was fatally shot by officer

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

A spokesman for the public transit system in Washington, D.C. says a large wooden stick was found in a subway tunnel where a police officer fatally shot a man.

Agency spokesman Dan Stessel declined to say Tuesday whether 35-year-old Bobby Gross was wielding the stick when he was shot by a Metro Transit Police officer on March 12. Stessel says no gun was found at the scene.

He referred all other questions to the U.S. Attorney's Office, which is determining whether the shooting was justified. An office spokesman declined to comment.

Metro officials have said that Gross was trespassing on the tracks outside the Potomac Avenue Metro station when he was shot by the officer. They have not specified what kind of threat Gross may have posed.

The unidentified officer is on paid leave.
