Attorney: Vanderbilt rape trial is about incident in dorm, not youth drinking or college life

As attorneys begin selecting jurors in a rape trial involving two former Vanderbilt football players, a prosecutor says the case hinges on what took place for 32 minutes in a dorm — not on youth drinking or what happens on college campuses.

Deputy District Attorney General Tom Thurman talked with prospective jurors Tuesday.

Four former players are accused of raping an unconscious coed in a dorm on the Nashville campus in June 2013.

Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey are being tried this week on five counts of aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated sexual battery. Vandenburg is also charged with one count of tampering with evidence and one count of unlawful photography.

Alcohol intoxication by the alleged victim and the defendants is expected to be spotlighted during the trial.
