Arkansas reporter, stranded for days in Texas state park, in stable condition after rescue

Published January 13, 2015

An Arkansas reporter is in stable condition at a Texas hospital after rescuers airlifted her from a state park where she'd been lost and stranded alone for two days.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reporter Cathy Frye had been vacationing at Big Bend National Park with her husband, photographer Rick McFarland. They were forced to leave on Oct. 1 because of the federal government shutdown.

They got lost in the state park and were left without food or a way out. McFarland went off alone in search of help Friday. When he returned with rescuers, Frye was nowhere to be found.

Rescuers found her midday Sunday, severely dehydrated and lying in a valley. She remains at University Medical Center of El Paso.
