Anchorage police says death of 4 people at residence suspicious

Four people were found dead in a home in Alaska's largest city, and Anchorage police say the deaths are suspicious.

Police have released little information after the bodies were discovered by a relative making a welfare check early Wednesday afternoon.

"Initial indication is that these are suspicious deaths," Anchorage police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said in an email to The Associated Press.

Police were attempting to determine if this was an isolated event or if a suspect was at large, she later told Anchorage television station KTUU (http://is.gd/jUiUza).

Police haven't released the causes of death, the sex of the victims or whether they were adults or children. Castro said the bodies have not yet been identified.

The bodies were discovered in a four-plex in a working class neighborhood. A neighbor, 62-year-old Larry Olsen, said he has lived across the street from the apartment building for 14 years. He saw someone banging on the apartment door Wednesday.

"The next thing I know I started hearing sirens," he told Anchorage television station KTUU.

Later, a woman appeared at the building about the same time as police, and Olsen said she was sobbing and crying. Later, she waited in a car as police and neighbors filled the streets.

"I heard a bunch of crying and a little bit of screaming, 'No, no, no,'" Olsen said.

Officers were conducting door-to-door interviews, and a neighbor reported hearing gunfire in the area Sunday afternoon. Another reported hearing some type of disturbance about 2:40 a.m. Wednesday.
