Amid suspect's murder trial, police interview man who says he could be missing boy Etan Patz

Prosecutors say a man who thinks he could be Etan Patz (AY'-tahn payts) has contacted authorities amid the murder trial of a suspect in the boy's 1979 disappearance.

Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon said Tuesday the man "had in his head" he could be the 6-year-old who vanished on his way to school.

Prosecutors say they've gotten calls like this before. They've asked police to interview him.

Illuzzi-Orbon handed over a police report to attorneys for Pedro Hernandez, who has confessed to killing Etan. His lawyers say his confession is fiction.

Etan's body was never found. In the decades since he went missing, dozens of people have claimed to be Etan, and they still do.

Illuzzi-Orbon legally had to disclose the information to his attorneys. The trial is proceeding.
