A southeast Alaska couple say the remains of their stillborn daughter were stolen from their vehicle when they were in Anchorage for a medical appointment.
Shawna Coby had a doctor's appointment Friday at the Alaska Native Medical Center.
KTUU reports that when Coby and her husband returned to their van they discovered a window had been broken and a backpack had been removed. The backpack held a small box containing the ashes of their stillborn baby daughter, who they named Grace.
Coby did not like to travel without the ashes, a relative told The Juneau Empire. "It's like going through the loss all over again," the relative said.
The couple, who are from Kake, filed a police report and are asking that whoever took the bag return the ashes. They say the box containing the ashes can be anonymously dropped off at the ANMC information counter.
"People need to understand this is very precious to them," Kimberly Moler, the woman's sister told the paper. "They never had a chance with their daughter; this is all they had."
