Alabama deputy shoots driver after car chase near Birmingham

Published June 22, 2016

Associated Press

Authorities say a sheriff's deputy shot and wounded the driver of a stolen vehicle who they say led officers on a car chase in the Birmingham, Alabama, area.

Shelby County sheriff's officials said in a statement that the deputy opened fire on the driver early Wednesday at the end of the chase, when the driver left Interstate 20.

Officials say he was ordered to get out of the vehicle, but instead he backed up "in an attempt to injure officers" and was shot.

Authorities say the suspect was taken to a medical facility, and that his condition wasn't known. They didn't release information about the officers or the suspect.

Authorities said the car had been stolen from nearby Jefferson County.

A passenger in the stolen car was being questioned.
