Abuse victims elsewhere riveted by Sandusky trial

The Penn State sex abuse trial has been wrenching — and sometimes heartening — for people who were themselves victims of abuse in their youth.

Unlike the witnesses testifying against former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky, most of them never got the chance to confront their abusers in court. Victims often wait many years, even decades, before speaking out, and often no trial takes place.

Claudia Vercellotti of Toledo, Ohio, who says she was molested for years in her adolescence by a Roman Catholic youth minister, has been following the trial closely and was moved by the testimony of the eight young men who said Sandusky abused them.

"It's vicarious justice — the closest many survivors will ever get to a courtroom where the perpetrator is held accountable," she said.
