NAME: Robert James "Bob" Shiller.

AGE: 65.

EDUCATION: University of Michigan, 1967, bachelor's degree in economics; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1972, Ph.D. in economics.

CAREER: Taught at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and the University of Minnesota before moving to Yale in 1982. In 1991, co-founded Case Shiller Weiss Inc., which used econometric models to provide home values. Co-founded MacroMarkets LLC, an investment management firm, in 2009. Has been a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research since 1980. Now a professor of economics at Yale's Cowles Foundation for Research and Economics and of finance at Yale's School of Management.

PERSONAL: Lives in New Haven, Conn., with his wife, Virginia, or "Ginny," a clinical psychologist. They have two children. His 10th book, "Finance and the Good Society," will be published in April. Website: www.econ.yale.edu/(tilde)shiller/

OBSCURE FACT: A lifelong friend of noted economist Jeremy Siegel, whom he met as a graduate student at MIT in 1967. Their families have regularly vacationed together. Since the mid-1990s, the two men have politely disagreed about the stock market's direction and other economic issues.
