9/11 commemoration in NYC aims to create unity

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

A Sept. 11 commemoration in New York City will include people standing hand in hand at 8:46 a.m., the time the first of two planes hit the World Trade Center.

Hand in Hand/Remembering 9/11 is scheduled along the waterfront on Manhattan's West Side this Sept. 10, the day before the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

Organizer Julie Menin says it's a way for New Yorkers to feel a sense of unity with each other. The terror attacks killed more than 2,700 people in the city.

Menin says Hand in Hand participants can volunteer for service projects in the area.

A website where people can sign up is expected to go live on Thursday.

The website is handinhand911.org .
