8 firefighters burned while battling Northern California wildfire; they have left hospital

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

Officials say eight firefighters who suffered burns while battling a wildfire in Northern California have been released from the hospital.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokeswoman Lynne Tolmachoff said that the injured firefighters were released early Saturday, just hours after being airlifted to the burn center at the University of California, Davis for treatment.

Officials say three firefighters from Santa Clara County and five inmate firefighters were burned fighting a blaze in Mendocino County late Friday night.

Tolmachoff says no details are immediately available on how they were injured.

Officials say an evacuation order has been issued for the fire, which is threatening nearly 60 structures across six communities.

The blaze, started by lightning July 30, has charred more than 11 square miles.
