60 dead cats among 100 animals discovered at Minnesota home

Published May 11, 2018

Associated Press

Authorities say a Minnesota woman has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after investigators found about 100 animals at her home, including 60 dead cats.

The Star Tribune reports that authorities removed more than 40 live cats, five dogs, one farm pig, a hamster and a dead rabbit from the single-family home in Dakota County, near the Twin Cities.

Animal Humane Society spokesman Keith Streff says his group received a call about a 400-pound pig running around the yard. Neighbors reported a foul smell near the property.

The 25-year-old woman was believed to be operating an animal rescue, which Streff says "got out of control." Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom declined to file charges Friday, saying more investigation is needed.

The surviving animals remain impounded at the Humane Society.
