$5M to display Confederate flag in South Carolina museum? Museum panel gives initial OK

Taxpayers may be shelling out more than $5 million for a new Confederate flag display at a museum.

The flag was removed from the South Carolina Statehouse grounds this summer after 50 years in the wake of the massacre of nine black church members in Charleston.

State law called for the flag to be displayed at the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum. The firms Watson Tate Savory and Haley Sharpe Design presented a $5.3 million proposal Thursday that includes renovating the museum and creating a newer, more modern display for the flag.

The commission that runs the museum gave its preliminary approval. Lawmakers will eventually have to OK any proposal. At least one black lawmaker says at first blush, the price tag seems a little steep.
