50 Cent: What They Don't Teach in Business School

50 Cent’s 2003 debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ was one of the best-selling hip-hop albums in history. It capitalized on a rough past -- one that included being shot nine times.

“Our society loves a trainwreck,” says 50 Cent. “Sometimes the person who was supposed to be the butt of the joke can learn information faster than you think.”

The rapper born Curtis Jackson in Queens, NY honed a special kind of survival instinct that gives him a competitive advantage. Robert Greene who co-authored the The 50th Law with the hip-hop star in 2009, wrote: “Coming from an environment where he never expected to live past the age of 25, he feels like he has nothing to lose, and this gives him tremendous power.”

That survival sense has driven him beyond music, to investing in a range of companies, most notably beverage startup Glaceau which earned him, according to Forbes, an estimated $100 million after Coca-Cola acquired its Vitaminwater brand in 2007 for $4.1 billion. Other ventures have included energy drink startup SK Energy, luxury undergarment line Frigo, and SMS Audio headphones. Some report his net-worth to be north of $150 million.

In this video, watch to the rap mogul share how he’s used gut instinct to his entrepreneurial advantage.
