5 dead, 3 injured in fiery crash on Georgia interstate

Published May 03, 2016

Georgia authorities say a fiery interstate crash west of Savannah killed five people and injured three others.

Sgt. Chris Rodewolt of the Georgia State Patrol says seven vehicles -- including two tractor-trailers -- collided early Wednesday on Interstate 16. He said one passenger vehicle involved in the crash caught fire.

Hours after the wreck, at least two mangled passenger vehicles could be seen at the bottom of an embankment beside the eastbound lanes. In front of them by the roadway was a tractor-trailer with its cab smashed into the back of a tanker.

Rodewolt says weather conditions were clear early Wednesday. Troopers are investigating what caused the crash. A 6-mile stretch of I-16 remained shut down more than five hours after the crash.
