4-star general to lead nuclear Air Force for 1st time in effort to fix array of ills

Published May 03, 2016

The Air Force has for the first time nominated a four-star general to lead the organization responsible for its nuclear missile corps and strategic bomber fleet.

It said Thursday that the nominee is Gen. Robin Rand, a career fighter pilot who has never served in the nuclear missile corps or the bomber force.

Rand currently is commander of Air Education and Training Command in San Antonio.

If confirmed by the Senate, Rand would replace Lt. Gen. Stephen Wilson as commander of Air Force Global Strike Command.

Last November, then-Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced that the position would be elevated to four-star rank as part of an effort to improve leadership of a nuclear air force suffering from low morale and lapses in discipline.
