4.8-magnitude earthquake shakes Sierra Nevada communities

Published February 16, 2016

Associated Press

California authorities say an earthquake on the eastern range of the Sierra Nevada shook several remote communities but caused no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported Tuesday afternoon that the magnitude 4.8 quake struck near the community of Big Pine in central California along U.S. Route 395. The temblor was followed by three aftershocks.

Cody Lawson, a dispatcher at the nearby Bishop Police Department, says he felt the quake that shook for about 6 seconds.

He says no one had immediately called to report an emergency in the town of about 2,500 residents.

Lawson says an aftershock followed a few minutes after the initial quake.

The quake was felt across the mountain range in Fresno.
