3 injured in fire at high-rise senior home in Los Angeles

Published October 11, 2016

Associated Press

A fire at a high-rise home for seniors in Los Angeles left three elderly residents with burns and smoke-inhalation injuries.

Fire officials say two of the injured are in critical condition and one is in fair condition after the Monday night blaze at the 15-story building.

City fire spokesman Scott Erik says flames were showing only from the fourth floor, but it's not yet clear how much of the building burned or what caused the fire.

Early official reports had put the injury toll at five.

The fire started at about 8:45 p.m. and was knocked down about 40 minutes later.

The building is a residential assisted-living facility for seniors. Those on the fourth floor and under evacuated, and most had to be helped to get out. Those on upper floors were told to stay in place.
