29 Cuban migrants land in Florida Keys on homemade boat

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

Twenty-nine Cuban migrants have been rescued after reaching land in the Florida Keys.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports the migrants reached Loggerhead Key Monday morning.

Once on land, they approached a National Park Service building. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation responded to the scene.

Under the "wet-foot, dry-foot" policy, most Cuban migrants who reach U.S. shores are allowed to stay.

FWC Lt. Joshua Peters said the migrants were thirsty and tired but otherwise in good health. They described being in rough seas for two nights before reaching shore. They traveled in a homemade boat of metal, Styrofoam and wood with a makeshift motor attached.
