2 detained after shooting of 6-month-old

Published April 17, 2016

Police say two men have been detained for questioning after a 6-month-old girl was fatally shot as she was with others in the yard outside a Detroit house.

Detroit Officer Dan Donakowski says the unidentified child was killed when a gunman came around some bushes, opened fire and then escaped in a car. A 24-year-old man also was injured and was in stable condition. It wasn't clear the relationship between the girl and the injured man.

"It appears to be gang related," Donakowski said, adding that it may be connected to the fatal shooting of a 3-year-old girl on Easter Sunday. He gave no other details.

The two men in custody are "persons of interest," Donakowski said.

Kyra Street, who said she is the girl's 21-year-old sister, said she was in the yard with her two young children and felt a bullet whiz by her face.

"I looked right back at him when he was shooting," Street told the Detroit Free Press. "I'm real lucky."
