2 deadly shootings mar annual anti-violence event

Published August 20, 2016

An annual anti-violence event in New Jersey's largest city has been marred by two separate shootings that left two men dead and a woman seriously wounded.

Prosecutors say the shootings in Newark occurred around the same time late Friday night. But it doesn't appear that the incidents are connected.

The shootings came just hours after city officials launched the fifth annual "24 Hours of Peace" celebration. It features several community events aimed at bringing people together and curbing violence in the city.

Authorities say 19-year-old city resident Kevin Baker and 24-year-old Robert Harrison, of Irvington, were killed in the shootings. A 27-year-old woman wounded in one shooting remained hospitalized Saturday in critical condition.

The shootings mark the second straight year that the anti-violence event has been marred by deadly shootings.
