2 accused of stealing plaque for doctor at Lincoln deathbed

Published August 12, 2016

Associated Press

Two men have been charged with stealing a brass plaque from a memorial honoring a New York doctor who was among the physicians dispatched to President Abraham Lincoln's deathbed.

Troopers say the plague honoring Dr. Willis Webster Munson was placed on a stone monument dedicated in 1921 in the Onondaga County town of Otisco, just south of Syracuse. Police say the plaque was reported missing July 22.

Troopers say they've charged a 34-year-old man from Tully and a 30-year-old man from Homer with criminal possession of stolen property. Police say the suspects sold pieces of the brass at a Syracuse recycling center.

Munson served in a New York regiment during the Civil War and was at the Washington home where Lincoln died after being shot in April 1865.
