16 media organizations file brief asking that gag order in Waco biker shooting case be lifted

More than a dozen media organizations are asking that a gag order imposed in a case connected to a Texas shootout in which nine bikers were killed be lifted.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and 15 other organizations, including The Associated Press, have filed a "friend of the court" brief in support of the motion filed by an attorney for Matthew Clendennen, the only person among 177 arrested after the shooting who has filed a lawsuit.

Nine people were killed and 18 injured in the May shootout authorities say arose from a confrontation between motorcycle clubs.

The gag order issued in Clendennen's criminal case last month prevents anyone involved from discussing it with media.

The media organizations' brief argues the order is unconstitutionally vague and overbroad.
