1 man missing, 3 others rescued when tugboat sinks off New York's Fire Island

Published May 21, 2015

The Coast Guard says a search is underway for a missing crew member after a tugboat sank off Fire Island in New York.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Morgan Gallapis said the search began Saturday afternoon after a crew member reported the tugboat was sinking.

She says three male crew members were rescued from the water about a mile off a section of the island known as the Pines.

But another man is missing. Gallapis says three Coast Guard boats, a helicopter and two other tugboats are searching for him in the icy waters off Long Island.

Gallapis says the three who were rescued were treated for hypothermia but otherwise had no physical injuries.

She did not know what caused the boat, called the Sea Bear, to sink.
