1 arrested, others sought after gunfire at Georgia Army base; no injuries reported

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

The military says two speeding vehicles entered a Georgia Army base and at least one shot was fired before some of the occupants fled into the woods.

One person is in custody at Fort Benning in Columbus after the incident Thursday, and authorities are looking for others.

A security device flattened the tires of both vehicles, but they continued into a residential area.

An Army statement says three to five men got out of the first car and ran into woods, but officers arrested the driver of the second vehicle and found a gun. A pistol was also recovered from the other vehicle. No injuries are reported.

A search didn't find anyone, and the Army is asking residents to keep their homes locked.

Authorities didn't release the name of the person they arrested.
