Jet lands in Pittsburgh after dog bites 2 aboard

Published January 07, 2015

Authorities aren't citing the owner of a dog that bit two people on a US Airways flight to Phoenix, forcing an emergency landing in Pittsburgh.

Authorities say the 89-year-old New Jersey woman was traveling with her Manchester terrier, Mandy, on Flight 522 from Newark, N.J., to Phoenix on Monday when the animal became agitated. A passenger tried to calm the dog, but it bit the passenger and broke out of its cage.

Authorities say the 12-pound animal then ran and bit a flight attendant. There were 122 passengers and five crew members aboard.

The bites were not severe, but the pilot landed the plane as a precaution. The flight resumed without the woman and her dog.

The woman spoke with authorities before boarding a different flight to Phoenix.
