Published May 23, 2016

Associated Press

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says the general manager of the world's busiest airport has been fired.

Reed said in a statement Friday night Miguel Southwell's tenure as general manager has ended at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Roosevelt Council will serve as interim general manager of the airport. Council is the airport's chief financial officer and deputy general manager.

Southwell's release comes while the airport prepares to launch a massive expansion project. The airport will start work soon on a $6 billion expansion and renovation project.

Workers will update the domestic passenger terminal and concourses in Atlanta. The airport is also adding a sixth runway and a hotel.
