Newark Airport is home to many of the worst flights in America according to The Wall Street Journal, which reported that 40 of the 100 most-delayed flights over the past year came from the New Jersey city hub.
The news gets worse for travelers headed to Atlanta from the New Jersey city: the two most delayed flights were Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) departures to Atlanta at 5 p.m. and 6:25 p.m, according to the Bureau of Transportation. Flight 2735 that leaves at 5pm was more than 30 minutes late on 60% of trips--averaging 83-minute delays.
The delays are due largely to air congestion in the Washington, D.C., area, Delta told The Wall Street Journal where traffic in and out of the Northeast cross.
Despite the congestion, fair weather conditions and higher oil prices trimming the number of flights offered suggest that operation should be fairly steady this year. Instead, late departures through May were up 8.6%, while arrivals spiked 9.6%.
Newarks no stranger to troubled flight schedules. In 2008, the FAA put restrictions (similar to those used at Kennedy and La Guardia) on the number of take offs and landings an airline could facilitate per hour. Rather than clear congestion, the limit let each airline book to capacity, sending a domino effect of time changes after just one delay.
