Twitter is reportedly looking to embrace GIFs more fully with a GIF button on its mobile apps.

Select Android owners spotted a "GIF" icon between the camera and poll images in the new-message window.

Pearlman told TechCrunch that the function lets you select trending or mood-based GIFs to share with followers.

"Does everyone [have] this or just the cool kids?" he tweeted on Wednesday, after posting a GIF of Robert DeNiro in Taxi Driver. According to TechCrunch, the feature disappeared from Pearlman's app shortly after that tweet.

The same was true for other people, who took to the social network to share their confusion and disappointment.

It's not unusual for Twitter to test new features or updates among a small user base. Twitter did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment, but took a page from Google's playbook and sent the following response to TechCrunch.

Facebook over the summer began testing a new GIF button inside its Messenger app, which lets folks send animated images without leaving the program. It offers trending clips from Giphy and Riffsy, among others, letting users express themselves in new, spirited ways. The company in May also launched the ability to post GIFs directly to your Facebook status update.
