Control who posts on your Facebook timeline
Q. I have a friend of a friend on Facebook who keeps posting things to my timeline even though I don't want him to. How can I make him stop?
A. You can block him entirely from his profile page, or use the Facebook setting to restrict who can post on your timeline. Avoid a scary IRS scam
Q. I got a call from an IRS agent who threatened to have me arrested if I didn't send them money they said I owed. I'm fairly sure it's a scam, but I'm really freaked out.
A. Don't worry; that was a scam. Scammers like to threaten to have you arrested to scare you. In situations where you owe money, the IRS will send you plenty of notices through the mail before they call, and they won't threaten to arrest you. Find out more signs of a phone scam and two other tricky scams that spread like crazy during tax season.
Is private browsing really private?
Q. I frequently use my browser's private browsing mode. But I'm starting to worry if it's really private. Is it?
A. Private browsing mode just means that your browser won't store history or cookies from the sites you visit. Your Internet service provider and the sites you visit still know you visited. Plus, if you download anything to your computer, it sticks around for people to find. Learn more reasons private browsing isn't totally private and how you can get more privacy if you need it.
Tech skills to put on your résumé
Q. I had someone say that "Proficient in Microsoft Office" doesn't mean much on a résumé anymore. What should I have?
A. If you want tech skills that will catch a hiring manager's eye, "content management systems" are a good start. That just means you know how to use software like WordPress, Joomla or Drupal. Knowing how to do basic Web development coding is another good one, and there are plenty of online resources. Find out what other tech skills hiring managers like to see on a résumé.
Stop Windows 10 lock-screen ads
Q. I got an ad for a game called Tomb Raider on my Windows 10 lock screen. How can I stop those?
A. Microsoft is experimenting with ads in Windows 10, but they're easy to shut off. Windows 10's lock screen images are pulled by default from an online service called Windows Spotlight. If you switch the background image to pull your own images from the computer, you have control of what appears. Get the step-by-step instructions to change your lock screen settings.
Bonus: Leaving Apple for Android
Q. I've decided to switch from Apple products to Android. What do I need to know?
A. The first hurdle in switching either way is moving your information. Both Apple and Google have instructions and programs to help you, but it is a bit of a process. Once you've done that, it's just a matter of getting used to the way Android does things. Learn what's different in Android so you can get the most out your new gadgets. Switching the other way?
